Fort Pickens February 24 - March 7, 2017 (LOTS of photos)

Beautiful beach at Fort Pickens Florida

Fort Pickens is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore on Santa Rosa Island, Florida. Randy had originally reserved the campsite thru March 3rd, but later Joyce checked with ranger at the check-in and he found they had an opening for 4 more nights. It meant moving to a different camp site and in A loop but we gladly did so to extend our stay. The roadway out to the campground & fort is 5 miles long following along the Gulf of Mexico on one side and Pensacola Bay on the other.  The beaches are within walking distance from the campgrounds.  We were fascinated by the nesting Osprey circling above with their screeching as they'd circle in the air.

The campground was 6 miles west out from Pensacola Beach

It was almost like having our own private beach. Lovin' the sun!
We stayed out for the sunset. It was fabulous!

Debbie & Len Larson were still staying at Destin, and Len wanted to see United States Air Force Armament Museum at Fort Walton at the Eglin AFB. So Saturday the 25th we met them there. It was interesting to see all the different type of aircraft. Especially the F4 Phantom that Len had once gotten to fly while he was in the service serving in Alaska. The movie that the museum gave us a taste of the sacrifice of the men & women in service. Also the security they provide our freedom here in the US.

Before Deb & Len left for their return trip thru Texas and home on Sunday the 26th. Kay had told Joyce that Rosella Petersen's grandson was the pastor at the Baptist Church in Navarre.(Rosella had welcomed Joyce into FBR's choir and they became close. Her dedication to the choir till the day she died at 98 years old was legendary!) So since we were planning on attending one of his services, the Larsons and Bradleys decided to have 3 couples from his home church attend that Sunday. Debbie & Kay remembered Jansen Petersen from their time with the youth groups. It was a great service. Debbie & Len needed to hit the road so we just grabbed a sandwich with them while Kay & Vaughn took the Petersen's out for lunch.

Navarre Florida

On the 2nd Kay and Vaughn came out to visit our RV & the fort with us. Fort Pickens was rather unique that its different than any other fort we have seen.  This fort  was originally built in the Civil War, then used in WWI & WWII.  After the fort we went into Pensacola Beach and had lunch at Peg Leg Pete's. We had a great time and of course lots of laughter. While touring the fort we met a young man that was by himself, dressed in a motorcyle jacket taking selfies.  We were on top of the fort by one of the canons and Joyce asked him if he would like for her to take his picture.  He said yes and our conversation with him began. Austin is from South Dakota but works in Alaska as a linemen for an electric company. He works for 4 weeks and has extended time off.   He is traveling the United States by motorcycle.  He travels for the length of time his days off are and then catches a flight back to his job in Alaska leaving his motorcycle where ever he ends up. Then he will fly back to where his motorcyle is and take off riding again.  The last we heard he had made it to Miami, Florida and was on his 16 hour flight back to Alaska.  We wish him well in his travels.

Randy had seen where the Pensacola Flyers the local ice hockey team had tickets for $5.00. So on Friday the 3rd we drove into Pensacola for the game. It started out looking like the local team was going to loose badly, but by 3rd period they came back and won it in overtime. A fun night!

We sat on the end of the arena. Where's Randy? LOL

Vaughn texted one day & asked if our road out to the campground was closed.  We hadn't heard of it but when we went to town that afternoon we saw that it had been closed.  The wind had been so strong making large waves in the gulf, that it washed sand and water over the roadway. The road had been closed until they had come in and cleared it.  I would guess the sand was at least 2-3 feet deep in places covering the road.  This becomes a scary thought after seeing this and realizing you are on an island with no way off.  Another day on our way back to mainland we could really see how high the waves had washed over road. Due to the frequency & expense of this happening, they were in process of moving that mile or so of roadway further north behind sand dunes to help keep sand off roadway.

You can see were they plowed the sand back off road.

Another day... you could see where the water (beside the sand) had blown across the road.

We always enjoy the puppy parade as everyone has to walk their dogs by your campsite.  We laugh at all the different breeds and attitudes of these dogs. Joyce had seen one large black dog being walked & thought it was a Giant Schnauzer. While riding our bikes thru the campground we were able to meet the owner & dog which turned out to be a Black Russian Terrier. The owner was a wounded vet & his wife had encouraged him to get a hobby and raising along with showing the dogs got him out of the house. He was showing the dog that weekend at Pensacola. We unfortunately never got a pick of the beautiful animal.

On the 7th we drove over to see the Pensacola lighthouse. Although it was only 2.5 miles from us it took 45 minutes to drive to it. LOL We had to drive the 6 miles back from the park then over 2 bridges over to the Pensacola Naval Air Base. We both walked up the 177 steps to top of lighthouse. Joyce laughed later and said she didn't feel bad after seeing a fit young 12 year old gasping for breath we she got to the top too. She said "good, it's not just us old & fat people out of breath!" Just down the road was the National Naval Aviation Museum. So we spent the rest of the afternoon there. It was huge! Joyce called her cousin Norman who along with his dad had been in the Navy to ask which ship his dad had served on in WWII. Joyce told him we'd just have to bring him out & leave him in museum for a week, as there was so much to see & read. We just took lots of photos and made a quick sweep. On way back to campground we stopped in Pensacola Beach and ate at Flounder's. Though a rain storm was coming we sat out on the patio overlooking the bay. A great ending to a great day.
It was only 2 miles to the lighthouse but to drive there took 40 minutes.

177 steps to the top. Joyce can smile as it wasn't near as tough going DOWN!

It was amazing the size of some of the planes.

Model of USS Essex. Joyce's uncle served on the Essex in WWII.

We loved the natural beauty of the beaches and birds on the island. We were so glad to be able to relax and God's handiwork for the 12 days and was sort of sad to move on to Davis Bayou in Mississippi.

Joyce searching for shells...of course toes in the water.

The dot at end of beach point is Joyce still walking west.

Glad we didn't step on the Portuguese Man O'War washed up on shore.
